A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
