Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Officers say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The substance had been placed in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then discovered many other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Officials state early analysis indicate the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; investigators are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the community for information.
A high-ranking official commented the incident left him speechless and had to be solved promptly.
"This act hits the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he wrote on online, referring to the killing of nine victims by a assailant targeting residents of migrant background in five years prior.
