RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
